The French adventure vacation begins Oct 2, 2006,  in Nice, France, on the French Riviera, then I travel up through the Provence countryside to Grenoble, then to the height of the Alps at Chamonix to finish up with a nice bicycle ride through the autumnal vineyards near Beaune,  Burgundy (Bourgogne).

Preparation for the Trip

Planning the trip from my home in New Hampshire. There's an audio review for the Rich and Famous (not mine).

Nice, France Part 1

Arrival on the French Riviera, hanging out on the smooth stones and swimming the Mediterranean in Nice (pronounced Neece).

Nice, France Part 2

Bicycle ride along the Mediterranean waterfront to the resort town of Monaco.

Digne, Provence

Train ride up from Nice to the town of Digne (pronounced "Dean") in the heart of Provence. A hike up to a small town.

Grenoble

Arrival in the mountain valley city of Grenoble. A climb up to the Bastille, an ancient fort that looks down on Grenoble.

Chamonix Part 1

On Sunday afternoon, the sky was filled with paragliders floating above the alpine village of Chamonix. (Pronounced "Sha-mo-nee")

Chamonix Part 2

The gondola is working, and I take it up to a point adjacent Mont Blanc, the highest alpine peak, where I gaze at a craggy, snowy wonderland from 14,000 feet.

Beaune, Burgundy

Beaune (pronounced "Bone" with a 'nuh' at the end) is in the heart of Burgundy, surrounded by vineyards and medieval towns. There are several bike paths connecting the towns and vineyards.
